How Licensing Works

MiraFeld is an artist‑owned studio. Instead of selling “the rights” to an artwork outright, we offer clear, written licences that explain exactly how you can use a design, what is included, and what is not included.

When you license an artwork from MiraFeld, you are buying usage rights, not the copyright itself. The artwork always remains the intellectual property of MiraFeld.

What “Exclusive Licensing” Means

Most MiraFeld licences are exclusive to the specific artwork purchased. This applies to Personal, Business, and Merchandise licences.

Once an exclusive licence takes effect, that artwork is marked as sold or licensed and will not be licensed to anyone else. MiraFeld may continue creating new original works in a similar style or mood, but not designs that are substantially identical to your licensed piece.

Standard prints are the exception. Prints are sold under a Non-Exclusive Personal Usage Licence, which means the artwork may also be sold, reproduced, or licensed to other customers unless otherwise stated.

What You’re Buying ; Usage Rights vs Ownership

When you buy a MiraFeld licence, you are buying the right to use the artwork in the specific ways set out in your licence, such as for a logo, tattoo, or merchandise.

You are not buying copyright ownership of the artwork itself, and you cannot resell the artwork as a standalone file, transfer the licence to someone else, or register it as a trade mark unless this is specifically allowed in your licence.

The Three Licence Types

Personal Usage Licence:

is for individuals using the artwork for personal, non-commercial purposes, such as tattoos, personal décor, or one-off personal items.

Business Usage Licence:

is for businesses using the artwork as part of their brand identity, including logos, websites, social media, stationery, signage, or packaging, but does not allow products for resale.

Merchandise Usage Licence:

is for businesses producing and selling approved products featuring the artwork, up to an agreed production limit and through approved sales channels. Branding rights can be added to a Merchandise Licence if agreed in advance, meaning a separate Business Licence is not needed for that artwork.

Physical Originals and Prints

In addition to the three main licence types for digital designs, we treat physical artworks as follows:

Original physical artwork: by default these come with an Exclusive Personal Usage Licence. You have exclusive personal rights to that specific artwork ( no business or merchandise use unless we agree to a separate licence).

Standard Prints: these are sold with a Non-Exclusive Usage License. This means you can display your print for personal, non-commercial use, but the same artwork or print may also be sold to other customers.

Each licence type has its own written agreement, which you can read before you purchase.

The Licensing Process

To purchase from MiraFeld, choose an artwork you love and select the licence that matches how you plan to use it:

Exclusive Personal Licence : for non-commercial use.

Exclusive Business Licence : for branding and identity

Exclusive Merchandise Licence : for products for sale, with optional branding rights if agreed in advance.

Original Paintings and Prints : come with there default licence unless additional business or merchandise rights are agreed upon in writing before purchase.

MiraFeld makes the full licence terms clearly available on the website before purchase, so you have the opportunity to understand what is included before you buy. By completing payment, you confirm that you have had the opportunity to read the applicable licence terms and agree to be bound by them. Once payment is received in full, your licence becomes legally binding.

Your files or artwork will then be delivered either by email for digital files or by shipping for physical pieces, and you become responsible for safely storing them after delivery.

Upgrades and Changes

In many cases, you can request to upgrade or change your licence later, such as moving from a Business Licence to a Merchandise Licence, increasing a production limit, adding new product types, or adding branding rights.

Any change must be requested in writing, agreed to by MiraFeld, and may involve an additional licence fee.

Until the upgrade is confirmed, you must stay within the scope of your original licence.

What Happens If I Stop Using the Artwork?

Life and businesses change, so MiraFeld licences may allow for a fair written exit or variation if you need to stop using a design or change how you use it.

Depending on the licence, this may include a short transition period to phase out existing branding materials, or a limited sell-through period for existing approved merchandise stock, with no new units produced. All arrangements must be discussed in good faith and confirmed in writing.
